Bardia National Park, located in the Bardia district of western Nepal, spans approximately 968 square kilometers, making it the largest national park in the Terai region. Established as a Royal Hunting Reserve in 1969 and later designated as the Royal Bardia Wildlife Reserve in 1976, the park was expanded in 1982 and officially named Royal Bardia National Park in 1988. Following the end of Nepal’s monarchy, it is now simply known as Bardia National Park.

The park’s diverse landscape includes lowland sal forests, grasslands, and the Siwalik Hills with chir pine and stunted sal. It provides habitat for over 640 animal species, including iconic and endangered species such as the Bengal Tiger, Asian Wild Elephant, and Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros. Bardia is particularly noted for its substantial population of Asian Wild Elephants, the largest in Nepal, and significant numbers of Bengal Tigers and Greater One-Horned Rhinoceroses. The park is also home to more than 400 bird species.

Bardia’s climate features a warm, dry season from October to March—ideal for wildlife sightings—and a hot period from April to May when animals are more likely to be seen near water sources. The monsoon season from June to September enhances the park’s lush vegetation.

Visitors can enjoy various activities including jeep and elephant-back safaris, canoe rides, and nature walks, while also engaging with the local Tharu communities. Bardia National Park is celebrated for its conservation efforts and offers a pristine environment for exploring Nepal’s rich natural heritage.
