The Kanchenjunga Massif

Mount Kanchenjunga rises to 8,586 m and is the world's third-highest mountain. The massif consists of several major summits, including Kanchenjunga Main, Yalung Kang, Kanchenjunga West and the Twin Peaks. Throughout the circuit, the character of the mountain changes dramatically.

From the North

The approach from Ghunsa through Kambachen and Lhonak provides increasingly close views of:

• Kanchenjunga Main (8,586 m)
• Kanchenjunga North Face
• Jannu / Kumbhakarna, approximately 7,710 m
• Chang Himal
• Wedge Peak and surrounding glacial summits

At Pangpema, the mountain dominates the horizon above the Kanchenjunga Glacier.

Across the High Passes

During the Sele La traverse, the landscape opens into an extraordinary high Himalayan panorama. Depending on weather and visibility, the ridges provide views toward the Kanchenjunga massif, Makalu and Everest-region mountains to the west and the Sikkim Himalaya toward the east.

From the South

The landscape changes again as the route enters the Yalung Glacier valley. From Ramche and the approach to Oktang, trekkers face the southern side of the Kanchenjunga massif, including:
